Upgrade MS SQL Server 2008 R2 to MS SQL Server 2012 – SAP

UPGRADE Procedure MS SQL Server 2008 R2 to MS SQL Server 2012. 

Prerequisites to upgrade to MS SQL Server 2012 in SAP environment:

  1. These steps are not valid for HA environment.
  2. Check note 1676665.
  3. Download the instructions document “Upgrade to and Installation of SQL Server 2012 in an SAP Environment” from http://service.sap.com/instguides -> Database Upgrades -> MS SQL Server
  4. Current Operating system should be Windows Server 2008 or Higher. If old version you should migrate that SAP system to Windows 2008 or Higher to use MS SQL Server 2012. Check SAP note 1476239 for more information.
  5. Download MS SQL Server 2012 to your local disk. Download it from SMP only.
  6. Download MS SQL Server 2012 SP3 from miscrosoft website.
  7. Your SAP BASIS component level should be as per note 1651862
  8. Check you have enough Disk space available in the server. At least 6 GB free disk space required.
  9. Install .net framework 3.5 SP1 and reboot OS.
  10. Install Windows Power shell if not installed already. Check Microsoft KB (KB968930),
  11. If you have SQL Server 2008 R2. You should apply minimum SP1 before you upgrade to SQL Server 2012
  12. If you have SQL server 2008. You should apply SP2 before SQL Server 2012 upgrade
  13. If you have SQL Server 2005. You should apply SP4 before SQL Server 2012 upgrade
  14. Upgrade Kernel patches, DBSL to latest.
  15. If Java engine update JDBC driver as per note: 639702
  16. Take complete DB Backup
  17. Suspend background jobs using btctrns1 from SE38 T-code.
  18. Stop SAP and Additional Application servers if any.

Upgrade Process: 

  1. Extract SQL Server 2012 software. In our case we downloaded 51047515 DVD (1 to 8) from SMP and extracted.
  2. Go to C:\SQL2012\51047515\x86-x64\EnterpriseEdition folder


3. Right click on Setup.exe and click on “Run as administrator”.


Select Installation



Select upgrade from SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2



Click on OK




Click on Next



Select “I accept” and Click on Next



Click on Next






Click on Next




Click on Next




Click on Next




Click on Next



Click on Next




Click on Next




Click on Next




Click on Next




Click on Next




Click on Upgrade




Click on Ok and restart OS

Next step is to perform Post steps using SWPM



Click on Next



Click on Next






Now all the steps are completed. Upgrade kernel to latest version and use the system.

  1. Finally, found good process info to upgrade SQL Server 2012.

  2. Hi, in the prerequisites you download SQL 2012 SP3 from the micrsoft site. (point 6.)
    but in the upgrade process you describe this SP is nowhere used?
